Unit 12 - Acids & Bases
Acids and bases are essential substances in health, industry, and the environment. We all have hydrochloric acid in our stomachs to digest foods and we take antacids, which are bases, to neutralize the effects of too much stomach acid. In industry, sulfuric acid is quantitatively the most produced chemical in the US. Sodium hydroxide, a base, is also a very important industrial chemical as it is used in the manufacturing of soaps and glass. In the environment, the acidity, or pH, of rain, water, and soil can have significant effects in nature such as acid rain dissolving marble statues and increasing corrosion rates.
